JD Sports denies it is seeking new leader

JD Sports has denied that it is looking to appoint a new leader following speculation that succession planning is underway.

The sportswear retailer made the move after comments were made in certain sections of the media over the weekend regarding the position of its executive chairman Peter Cowgill.

The speculation followed a line in the retailer’s recent annual report which said “additional succession planning has occurred throughout the financial year following concerns relating to the single appointment of an executive chairman”.

In a statement this morning, the company said: “JD can confirm to both investors and to its international brand partners that the board is not engaged in a process to recruit a chief executive officer or chairman. JD can also confirm that it is continually reviewing the depth of its management team to ensure that the senior operational leadership team in the business has the necessary skills and experience to exploit the ongoing global development opportunities.”
