Trafford Centre announces sustainability and social impact programme
Shopping and leisure destination, Trafford Centre, has announced ‘For Our Future’ – its commitment to people and the environment.
The centre’s sustainability and social impact strategy focusses on positive environmental and social change, bringing together Trafford Centre’s colleagues, tenants, and the local community.
In order to deliver real action, Trafford Centre’s priorities are woven into every aspect of the management and day to day running of the centre and, importantly for a retail and leisure destination, customer experience.
The core pillars of the ‘For Our Future’ programme are:
- Achieving Net Zero Carbon in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, whilst working with the centre’s tenant brands to help support their carbon reduction initiatives, as part of Trafford Centre’s Scope 3 commitments
- Enhancing Trafford Centre’s commitment to being a socially responsible business operator and looking after the people who work there
- Becoming a positive role model for other real estate businesses in the retail and leisure sectors
The programme is backed by substantial and measurable objectives in the environmental, social and governance areas which all seek to minimise Trafford Centre’s impact on the environment and continue to make a positive contribution to the local community.
Key areas of investment include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and waste; EDI and community projects and social value. Meanwhile, some of the actions being taken include replacing all existing external lights with LEDs, achieving 65% on-site waste segregation by 2025, introducing a green lease scheme for tenants, increasing investment and engaging with communities as well as seeking to introduce solar power and more EV charging.
Fraser Pearce, Chairman of Trafford Centre, said: “Our approach to running a responsible business is built on partnership, collaboration and transparency. We believe it’s vital for everyone who works, shops at and visits Trafford Centre to be engaged with our journey, so we’re committed to delivering, together. By making practical changes such as improving our biodiversity, reducing waste, having a positive impact on our community and supporting the vulnerable, we can build a positive legacy and future.”
Trafford Centre welcome over 25 million visitors every year and include 280 brands, including Selfridges, John Lewis, Zara, Next, Marks & Spencer and a 20-screen ODEON cinema.
