Cowley’s Templars Square in £60m transformation bid

The owners of The Templars Square shopping centre in Cowley have submitted a planning application to completely transform the centre and its surroundings.

New River said the £60 million mixed-use proposals will preserve the existing Templars Square shops and add a hotel and new restaurant units. They will also aim to improve the streetscape, pedestrian routes and car parking facilities.

In addition, the proposals submitted to Oxford City Council include plans for the building of 200 apartments.

New River hopes the plans will lead to a better experience for shoppers and the wider local community while attracting new shoppers, encouraging longer visits, and acting as a catalyst to growth and further investment for Cowley.

Allan Lockhart, property director of New River, said: “This milestone marks a real step-change for Cowley and is long-overdue. The case for regeneration is absolutely clear and this is an excellent opportunity to reinvigorate the heart of the town centre with high quality and modern, yet sensitively designed, development that will be a source of real pride locally – not just for our large number of loyal shoppers but for the wider local community.”
