B&Q has been serving British customers with a wide range of DIY supplies since 1969 when Richard Block and David Quayle opened their first store in Southampton.

B&Q has been serving British customers with a wide range of DIY supplies since 1969 when Richard Block and David Quayle opened their first store in Southampton. Using their surname initials to form the company’s name. the duo created what has now become the UK’s leading home improvement and garden living retailer, and the third largest of its kind globally. All B&Q shops are large warehouse style stores that offer thousands of different products. For over 50 years, the company's aim has been to offer good product prices along with expert in-store advice to help customers create smarter homes. It also prides itself on innovation and sustainability initiatives. This includes the One Planet Home programme which ensures that the business operates in an environmentally friendly manner. B&Q is now owned by te Kingfisher Group which also owns Screwfix in the UK, Castorama and Brico Depot in France, and Koctas in Turkey. B&Q Products and Services:

Stores

The Kingfisher group has 1,386 stores globally. 300 of which are B&Q fascias in the UK. There are also a handful of B&Q stores in Ireland.

B&Q's website provides 24 hour, 7 days a week access to B&Q products, expert advice, inspirational room ideas and 'how to' guides, plus general information on stores and community activities. It is estimated by the company that 75% of people research the products online prior to buying in-store.

Employees

Across the whole Kingfisher Group, 80,000 people are employed globally; this includes 552 members of senior management and a further nine who are on the board. Most of these work in stores (72,000), with around (7,000) working in administration. This total is broken down into 57% and 43% female.

There are 27,000 people working in B&Q stores in the UK.

There are many investors involved with the group. five different investment groups hold between 5% and 6% of the total Kingfisher shares each (Thornburg, Mondrian, Jupiter, Templeton and Silchester). A further five investors own between 2% and 5% of total shares each.
