Superdrug launches contactless payments in 50 stores

Health and beauty retailer Superdrug has launched contactless payment at 50 of its stores across London and Liverpool and confirmed that it plans to expend the technology across the rest of the UK during 2012.

Superdrug said the technology, which allows  customers tap a contactless-enabled card on a reader to make payments of up to £15, will result in quicker transaction times and reduced queues.

The contactless technology is being provided by Streamline and supported by Visa Europe. The two  companies have already implemented contactless technology in the UK with fast food retailer McDonald’s.

Gill Smith, Superdrug financial director, said: “The adoption of this technology will provide a new and improved experience for our customers, with reduced queues and faster transactions.”

It is estimated there are around 20 million contactless cards in circulation in the UK, with a total of 30 million anticipated by the end of 2012. There are over 75,000 acceptance terminals in the UK with a significant increase expected over the coming year.

Darren Wilson, managing director at Streamline, said: “This partnership is the latest milestone in the adoption of contactless technology by the UK’s largest retailers. Contactless payments are a cost effective, fast and efficient option, for both customers and merchants.

“We expect to see a ‘tipping point’ in contactless adoption over the next year or so as many more retailers adopt the technology, and it’s fantastic to see one of our biggest customers at the forefront of this trend. Streamline is committed to keeping retailers up to date with the latest industry and consumer trends, with ongoing support and guidance in implementation.”

Mark Austin, head of contactless, Visa Europe, said: “The increase in contactless acceptance, led by organisations like Superdrug, TFL and McDonald’s, has set the scene for a major change in the way we pay. The growing contactless infrastructure across the UK also paves the way for the introduction of mobile payments. We’re excited to be working with partners across the industry to make the future of payments a reality – both on the high street and online.”
