Nisa trials electronic shelf labels
A Nisa Local store in Shrewsbury has become the first in the independent retail sector to trial electronic shelf edge labels.
The trial at Nisa member Rav Garcha’s store will last for 12 months and is aimed at highlighting the benefits of the electronic shelf labelling in convenience stores.
Nisa said the store will use the electronic labels to develop its in-store marketing. The labels can host QR codes directing consumers to popular websites, communicate meal ideas and suggest appropriate meal accompaniments which can be purchased in-store. In addition, the technology will enable the store to make automatic pricing and timed promotional updates.
The new system has been introduced by Nisa’s Innnovations Committee which is responsible for developing new technological advancements for independent retailers.
Garcha said: “A significant amount of UK customers make unplanned in-store purchases. Commonly their decisions are based on price, so the most important thing for stores, is to ensure that pricing is easy to see and compelling, encouraging repeat purchase and customer retention at local stores. The Innovations Committee, which is made up of Nisa IT technologists and independent forward thinking retailers, was introduced to help ensure that independent retailers are moving with technological changes to develop their stores and consumer marketing campaigns.”
Nisa IT director at Nisa, Wayne Swallow added: “The implementation of this trial shows that Nisa is looking to develop and utilise sector-leading equipment to help develop retailer’s stores. Earlier this year we saw the need to introduce an innovations committee to help Nisa retailers develop and progress with new technologies available. We are pioneering the use of new technology to help Nisa retailers.”
