Sainsbury’s and Greencore pledge to donate one million fresh meals to tackle food insecurity
Sainsbury’s has teamed up with its long-standing supplier Greencore to produce and donate one million fresh meals to those facing food insecurity.
The meals will be distributed through the charity FareShare, reaching over 8,000 frontline organisations across the UK.
From now until the end of April, 25p from every Sainsbury’s Italian-style ready meal sold will help fund this initiative. Popular dishes like spaghetti Bolognese and carbonara are included, giving customers a simple way to support communities in need while enjoying their favourite meals.
Richard Crampton, Director of Fresh Food at Sainsbury’s, said: “We recognise the need for collaboration across the food industry to address food insecurity. By working with Greencore and FareShare, we can efficiently use our resources to provide good food for all and support those who need it most.”
The meals will be produced by Greencore and distributed by FareShare, ensuring that surplus capacity and resources are used to benefit local communities. This initiative builds on Sainsbury’s ongoing partnership with Comic Relief, which has already helped donate over five million meals through recent campaigns.
Kris Gibbon-Walsh, CEO at FareShare, said: “This partnership highlights the power of collaboration in scaling up food redistribution. By working together, we can reach more people in need, from children in afterschool clubs to older people in lunch programmes, strengthening communities across the UK.”
This initiative underscores Sainsbury’s commitment to tackling food poverty and ensuring access to nutritious meals for vulnerable communities.
