Specsavers Apprenticeships offers a clear path to career success
As National Apprenticeship Week comes to a close, it’s time to shine a spotlight on an employer dedicated to developing talent through apprenticeships: Specsavers.
With 62 current vacancies nationwide, Specsavers offers a wealth of opportunities for individuals looking to kickstart or advance their careers in the optical industry.
Specsavers’ apprenticeship scheme is open to anyone aged 16 and over, whether they’re fresh out of school or seeking a career change. The company provides a diverse range of apprenticeships, with in-store roles such as optical assistants and lab technicians, as well as apprenticeship opportunities in various departments at their support offices.
The most popular Level 3 apprenticeship runs for 15 to 18 months, providing hands-on training while allowing apprentices to earn as they learn.
Never Miss a Retail Update!Dena Watt, Head of Apprenticeships at Specsavers, explains the impact of the programme:
“At Specsavers, we are passionate about helping people learn and grow, and our diverse range of apprenticeships offer a great stepping stone into our business. Around 90% of apprentices stay on in permanent positions after qualifying, and most go on to gain further qualifications.
Our apprenticeship programme has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, ranked in the Top 100 Apprentice Employers, and received the prestigious Princess Royal Training Award.
So, if you are deciding what to do after school, college, or university, or if you are looking for a change in direction, an apprenticeship at Specsavers could be for you.”
A real success story: Rosie’s Journey
One of the many apprentices to benefit from the programme is Rosie Tanner, a customer service apprentice from the Weston Super Mare store. Her journey demonstrates how an apprenticeship can provide not just skills, but also confidence and career progression.
What was it like starting your apprenticeship?
“When I first embarked on my customer service apprenticeship, I was very nervous and apprehensive, particularly when talking to new people. But with the support of my incredible team and positive customer feedback, my confidence grew month by month.”
How did your role develop over time?
“By the third month, I was handling calls and in-person interactions with ease and actually enjoying them! At the start, I struggled with completing tasks and often sought help, but my team was always there to guide me. Soon, I was confidently contributing and even helping others.”
What impact has the apprenticeship had on your career?
“I completed my exams with a triple distinction, which gave me the confidence to push further. Halfway through my apprenticeship, I decided to train as an audiologist, and I’m now pursuing the Audiology Practitioner course at Specsavers. My next goal is to complete a Hearing Aid Dispenser degree next year.”
What would you say to others considering an apprenticeship?
“My apprenticeship was the making of me. Today, I’m a confident, capable member of the team, tackling new challenges and embracing new learning opportunities. If you’re thinking about an apprenticeship, I’d say go for it – it may just be the making of you too!”
