Meet Terry Cannon, founder and MD of WeComm

We’re super chuffed to announce Terry Cannon, as a judge for this year’s People in Retail Awards.

With over 18 years of experience in the retail industry, Terry’s journey is a testament to hard work, grit and an unwavering focus on people. Terry has build a reputation for building meaningful connections and championing authenticity. As a judge, his expertise and passion will bring invaluable insights to this year’s awards, which aim to celebrate the incredible individuals who make retail such an inspiring industry.

What does retail as a career mean to you and how have people in this industry shaped your journey?

Retail has been a constant in my life for nearly two decades. I started 18 years ago, coming from a council estate without much direction, and ended up in e-commerce at a time when it was just beginning. I didn’t plan for retail to become my life, but it did, and it’s been an amazing journey.
For me, retail has always been about the people. It’s not the products or the sales – it’s the connections, the support and the loyalty I’ve received along the way. Those people have shaped my career and my business. Without them there’d be no WeComm. They’ve trusted us, given us opportunities and built something greater than I could have imagined.

What’s inspired you to take part?

For me, it was an easy decision. The People in Retail Awards align perfectly with everything I believe in—celebrating people and recognising their impact on the industry. Retail is about connection, collaboration, and community, and these awards are a great way to honour the individuals who make those things happen.
I also think it’s important to shine a light on the human side of retail. Behind every success, there’s a story, a challenge, and a person who made it possible. Being part of something that celebrates those stories is incredibly meaningful to me.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Ultimately, I agreed to be a judge because I want to help amplify the voices of the people who drive this industry forward. It’s a privilege to be able to do that and to give back to a sector that has given so much to me.

Why do you think it’s important to celebrate and recognise people in retail?

People are the backbone of everything. You can have the best technology in the world, but it was created by people. Success in retai – and in life – comes down to understanding and appreciating the humans behind it all.

Checking in with people, recognising their efforts and appreciating their journeys are so important. Challenges don’t discriminate and everyone, no matter their position, deserves kindness and support. Celebrating people reminds us that behind every success is a story worth telling.

Is there someone in your career who has been particularly memorable or influential?

Without hesitation, my Dad. He came from very little but gave everything, and his work ethic is something I carry with me every day. He taught me that it’s not about what you have; it’s about who you become. That’s been my guiding principle throughout my career. I’ll never be the smartest person in the room, but I’ll always be the hardest working, and that’s because of him. He’s the greatest person I’ll ever meet, and his influence is something I’ll always be grateful for.

I’m honoured to be part of this year’s judging panel. These awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise the amazing people in our industry, and I can’t wait to celebrate their achievements.
