Waitrose and John Lewis report surge in haircare sales

Waitrose has reported a surge in sales of hair dye and haircare products since lockdown began in March.

The supermarket saw sales of hair colour climb by 149% year-on-year last week with both blonde and brunette shades selling fast. The most popular items were root touch-up products.  Sales of hair treatments were also buoyant with a rise of 102%.

Meanwhile, some of John Lewis’s most popular products included hair clippers, shavers, straighteners and curling tongs.

Rachel Gill, buyer at Waitrose & Partners, said:  “While some have waited to visit their favourite salon, many of us are reaching the point in lockdown when our roots might be more obvious or our fringe is too long. Now that the wait could be longer, we expect more customers to take grooming into their own hands as people adjust to new ways of managing hair for the whole family.”

Waitrose has also found that customers are spending more time pampering themselves at home during the lockdown. Sales of face masks were particularly strong last week with an uplift of 270%. In addition, hand cream and body lotion sales rose by 112 % and 30% respectively.
