Amazon acquires One Medical
Amazon is to acquire primary care organisation One Medical as it looks to strengthen its position in the healthcare sector.
The online retail giant will buy the company in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $3.9 billion.
One Medical combines in-person care in offices across the US with digital health and virtual care services.
Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, said healthcare is high on the list of experiences that need reinvention.
He explained: “Booking an appointment, waiting weeks or even months to be seen, taking time off work, driving to a clinic, finding a parking spot, waiting in the waiting room then the exam room for what is too often a rushed few minutes with a doctor, then making another trip to a pharmacy—we see lots of opportunity to both improve the quality of the experience and give people back valuable time in their days.”
One Medical’s parent company is Life Healthcare which has headquarters in San Francisco. On completion of the deal, Amir Dan Rubin will remain as chief executive of the business.
In 2018, Amazon acquired the online pharmacy PillPack and the following year bought start-up Health Navigator which now supports employee health service Amazon Care.
