Wynnstay Group appoints Poundland’s Jim McCarthy as non-exec director

Rural retailer Wynnstay Group has appointed Poundland chief executive Jim McCarthy as a non executive director.

The Powys based business hopes to benefit from McCarthy’s retail know-how to expand its specialist retail business.

McCarthy has been CEO of Poundland since 2006. With a retail career spanning over 38 years, McCarthy’s prior roles include managing director of convenience at Sainsbury’s and CEO at T&S Stores, which he built up to over 1,100 outlets before selling to Tesco in 2003.

Wynnstay reported  revenues of £164.57 million in the six months to April and profits of £4.15 million.

Commenting on the appointment, chairman of Wynnstay Group John Davies said: “I am delighted to welcome Jim to the board. His appointment adds further skills and experience to the board as we continue to build the group’s agricultural and specialist retailing activities.”

Wynnstay, which has been steadily expanding in recent years, operates 28 rural supplies stores under the Wynnstay Stores brand as well as 18 Just for Pets stores.

The company also produces feeds, fertiliser and seed for the agricultural market.
