Wippit whips up music download battle
Download site in talks with rival retailers
Music downloader Wippit has weighed in to the new battle for music downloads by revealing it is in talks with rivals to Woolworths.
London-based Wippit, which offers tracks from 29p, pointed out that Woolworths sale price of 67p anounced yesterday is still more than double the cost of downloads to Wippit users.
The company offers an own branded download service to retailers and said it is currently in discussions with Woolworths’ competitors regarding this.
Wippit CEO Paul Myers said: “We welcome Woolworths reducing their prices even if it’s more double Wippit’s. But as far as a price war being waged, Woolies have come out with a pop gun into a field full of cannons!”
He added that unlike Wippit, Woolworth downloads are not compatible with the market leading Apple iPod player.
