Windy weather keeps shoppers at home
The latest Retail FootFall Index figures from FootFall, show that the high street also took a battering, with shopper numbers falling by 7.2% compared to the previous Thursday and 17.2% against the same day last year.
“During weather extremes the high street is often the first to suffer. Transport difficulties and official warnings combine to dissuade consumers from making anything other than necessary shopping trips. However, unless harsh conditions last for any great length of time, shopping trips are usually just displaced until another day.
“This was certainly the case last week when retailers experienced a boost in footfall over the weekend as shoppers made up for missed mid-week trips. The weekend saw a week-on-week gap of just -0.9%, considerably closer than the 7.2% shortfall recorded on Thursday. As the late winter weather continues to chop and change, retailers should be prepared for a rollercoaster ride.” Footfall said
