Whiteley shopping centre welcomes 4.7 million shoppers in first year
The Whiteley shopping centre in Hampshire has welcomed over 4.7 million shoppers in its first year since opening.
The 320,000 sq ft scheme, which is managed by British Land and Universities Superannuation Scheme, has recently celebrated its first birthday with a giant birthday cake and a competition where one lucky shopper won a £1,000 shopping spree.
Earlier this month the shopping centre announced that work had started on an £18 million leisure extension which will open in summer 2015. The second phase will deliver a nine-screen Cineworld cinema and 30,000 sq ft of additional restaurant and leisure space including Five Guys, Nando’s, Pizza Express and Coast to Coast. Whiteleys said the extension is now 75% let with just two units still available.
Claire Barber, head of shopping centre asset management for British Land, said: “Whiteley continues to surpass our expectations and we are delighted with its performance to date. We look forward to Whiteley’s continued success and opening the leisure phase next summer.”
