WH Smith reports flat like-for-like sales

WH Smith has reported that total group sales were up 1% and like-for-like sales were flat in the 13 weeks to 30 May.

In a statement, the book and stationery retailer said total sales at its travel business rose by 8% year-on-year while like-for-like sales grew by 4%.

However, the company’s high street business saw a 4% decline in both total and like-for-like sales which was in line with expectations.

WH Smith said its ‘Food to Go’ range, the rollout of which was completed last summer, was continuing to be popular with customers. In addition, it said good progress was being made with gross margin improvement and its new store opening programme, both in the UK and overseas.

The company added: “We will continue to focus on profitable growth and cash generation while investing in new opportunities in both Travel and High Street that position us well for the future. We remain confident in the outcome for the full year.”
