Westfield Stratford City welcomes 47 million shoppers in first year
The Westfield Stratford City shopping centre has marked its first birthday by announcing that it has welcomed around 47 million shoppers in its first year of trading with nearly 40% of customers returning at least once a week.
The 1.9 million sq ft centre said that over 1 million people visited the centre within the first seven days of trading in September 2011. Since then it has received on average 800,000 visitors a week and generated £500 million for the first six months in sales.
Located adjacent to the Olympic Park, the shopping centre attracted 8.5 million visits during the Olympic and Paralympic Games when it increased its opening hours by 30%.
Bill Giouroukos, Westfield director of operations said: “Westfield is focussed on delivering the best customer experiences and the best environment for our retailers. Westfield Stratford City has the key ingredients for a successful shopping centre including a superior mix of retail, leisure and dining through to leading design, technology and sustainability.
Never Miss a Retail Update!“Following an exceptional Games period for Westfield and our retailers, we are now entering the next key phase of development at Westfield Stratford City. We are committed to Stratford’s continued regeneration and look to deliver similarly iconic schemes in cities around the world.”
Westfield said it has created over 10,000 permanent jobs since opening, of which at least 40% were taken by residents of east London and over 2,600 by residents of Newham.
