Westfield signs deal with DHL for consolidation centre
Contract logistics specialist DHL Supply Chain has signed a five year contract with the Westfield Group to provide consolidation and dock management delivery services to the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre.
To support the contract, DHL is placing a full time logistics team at the shopping centre, and will use a DHL designed web-based delivery management system to control the flow and sequence of deliveries for the centre’s 250 retailers. The system has been developed to reduce back-of-store and loading bay congestion by providing inbound stock visibility for service yard management operations.
In addition, DHL will operate a consolidation platform eight miles from Westfield Stratford City. This will provide additional flexibility to retailers’ final mile logistics operations and reduce vehicle movements to Westfield Stratford City by up to 80%. DHL estimates that use of the paltform will also cut pollution emissions in the local area by up to 75%.
Paul Richardson, managing director of DHL Supply Chain’s UK Fashion unit added: “The benefits of our consolidation model will ensure reduced congestion at the new Stratford complex during particularly busy periods, whilst driving significant environmental savings and operational benefits for the retailers housed there.”
John Burton, Director, Westfield Stratford City said: “We have worked closely with DHL over the past 18 months to develop a solution to the logistical challenges facing the Capital next summer and see the logistics consolidation offering as key to this.
“This project also allows us to support our environmental agenda, reducing road traffic movements around the Centre whilst ensuring a seamless end to end supply chain product for participating retailers at Westfield Stratford City.”
