Westfield plans extension for its White City shopping centre

Westfield has submitted an outline application to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham for redeveloping land north of its existing flagship shopping centre in White City.

The £1 billion regeneration plan seeks to redevelop the nine hectare site into a new pedestrian quarter that will feature an extension to the Westfield London shopping centre including a new department store and smaller shops, as well as 1,600 new homes.

Westfield said the scheme is expected to create thousands of new jobs for local residents.  Existing traders around Shepherd’s Bush are also expected to benefit from the increase in footfall.

Frank Wingate, chief executive of West London Business commented:”As the representative body for the business community in this part of London, we fully support Westfield’s latest proposals within the White City Opportunity Area. The plans will deliver 2,500 much-needed new jobs and further investment to West London, bringing more customers to other businesses in Hammersmith and Fulham.”

Westfield unveiled draft plans for redeveloping the site earlier this summer after the area was earmarked for regeneration by the Greater London Authority and the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham with the publication of the White City Opportunity Area Planning Framework.

If the planning application is approved, Westfield will begin the detailed design of the development next year, with construction unlikely to start before 2014.
