Western retailers taken to the heart of China

State news agency heralds expansion of foreign retailers into Beijing
November 19 2002
The official Chinese news agency has announced that seven foreign retailer are expanding into the capital Beijing next year.

Coming just days after the appointment of new Chinese head of state, the official announcement will be interpreted as a sign of increased Government support for retail investment in the country.
The official China Daily said that retailers coming into Beijing after operating for several years in Shanghai and other eastern Chinese cities are Wal-Mart, B&Q, Germany’s OBI, Leroy Merlin and Auchan of France, US-based Seven Eleven and Spanish retailer Discount.
Retailers already in Beijing including Ikea, Carrefour and Ito Yokada are to expand their operations in the Chinese capital.
The reported quoted officials from the Beijing Commerce and Trade Committee.
