Waterstone’s MD to step down
David Gilbert resigns on health grounds
HMV Group has announced that David Gilbert, managing director of its Waterstone’s book retail group, has resigned from his position due to ill health.
As a result, Brian McLaughlin, chief operating officer of HMV, has postponed his planned retirement, and will combine the roles of HMV group chief operating officer and acting managing director of Waterstone’s with immediate effect.
Alan Giles, HMV goup chief executive, said: “I would like to thank David for his contribution during his time at Waterstone’s. He leaves the business in good shape and we wish him a speedy recovery and best wishes for the future.
“We are delighted that Brian has agreed to become acting managing director as he brings a wealth of proven experience to the role.’
Gilbert said: “Following a most enjoyable period of six months at Waterstone’s, I have chosen to resign from the company due to a period of ill health that has prevented me from being able to carry out my duties fully.
“I intend to pursue my literary interests while I recover full health and wish Waterstone’s every success for the future.”
