Wal-Mart US sales leap forward
International business still booming

Wal-Mart has seen a strong increase in sales growth in its US business, with year-on-year sales in the core Wal-Mart Stores division up by 13.8 per cent in August to $13.4bn.
The Sam’s Club warehouse division reported sales of $2.65bn, up 11.3 per cent over August 2002.
In a month when many US retailer reported stronger sales increase, the domestic performance by the world’s largest retailer is an indication that US consumers are increasing their spending.
In the first 30 weeks of 2003, Wal-Mart Stores sales have increased by 10.9 per cent overall. Total US like-for-like sales are up 3.4 per cent for the year so far, compared to 6.7 per cent in the same period in 2002.
Wal-Mart’s international division, which includes the 261 Asda stores in the UK, saw year-on-year sales increase by 15.2 per cent in August. Wal-Mart does not give a country by country breakdown for it monthly sales.
