Wal-Mart springs ahead in May

Strong international showing for Asda parent

Wal-Mart Stores saw an 11.5 per cent rise in net sales during May to $18.3bn.
Sales for the 17-week period to the end of May were $74.7bn, an increase of 12.7 per cent over the same period last year.
The international division of the world’s biggest retailer, which includes the 254 Asda stores in the UK, saw sales a fraction under $3bn, up 9 per cent on May 2001. International sales for the 17 week period were up 10.6 per cent.
Wal-Mart’s total like-for-like sales in May were up 6.2 per cent on last year.
