Wal-Mart sees increase in part-time employees
26 April, 2006 | by Retail Bulletin
The percentage of employees at Wal-Mart who work part time has risen, the company said yesterday.
Eduardo Castro-Wright, chief executive of the retailer’s U.S. division, said that 75% of its 1.3 million workers are employed full time. “That’s a downward trend,” “It’s gradually coming down, not significantly.”
The actual ratio of part-time to full-time workers in each store depends on who is available to work in what areas of the country, Castro-Wright said; most of the part-time workers are students, the retired or those wanting second jobs.
Some current and former workers have claimed that the company is favoring hiring more part-time employees recently to trim operating and healthcare costs.
