Wal-Mart plans to cut global plastic bag waste by 33 per cent

Wal-Mart has announced plans to reduce its global plastic shopping bag waste by 33 per cent over the next five years.

The initiative is expected to eliminate the equivalent of 9 billion plastic bags and could reduce energy consumption by approximately
678,000 barrels of oil per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 290,000 metric tons per year – equivalent to taking more than 53,000 passenger vehicles off the road annually. Wal- Mart will to encourage customers to use reusable shopping bags while offering recycling services for the plastic bags already used by customers.
“If we can encourage consumers to change their behavior, just one bag at a time, we believe real progress can be made toward our goal of creating zero waste,” Matt Kistler, Wal-Mart’s senior vice president for sustainability, said in a statement.
