Food sales stronger in US stores
Wal-Mart has reported that its January US same-store sales growth remains on track at the halfway point of the month.
The world’s biggest retailer said sales are still estimated to be in the 2 to 4 per cent range for the January.
In the week to Friday, January 14, Wal-Mart’s comparative food sales growth was were stronger than general merchandise. Higher average spend drove growth rather than higher footfall.
With the Superbowl weekend a week later this year, on February 6, Wal-Mart expects some food spend to move into the February sales period this year compared to 2004.
