Waitrose to help support 17,000 elderly, homeless and vulnerable people this Christmas
For the second year running, Waitrose will help to support elderly, homeless and vulnerable people in the community this Christmas.
The supermarket is supporting over 300 lunch events across the country and expects nearly 17,000 people to benefit.
Waitrose is donating money towards food and other resources for the lunches, which will be held in locations such as homeless shelters and care homes. In addition, Waitrose partners are volunteering to plan and attend the events, using hours from the Partner Volunteering scheme while being fully paid by Waitrose. The supermarket is set to donate over 1,800 hours, the equivalent of more than two months, to the campaign.
After encouraging local groups to get in touch with their nearest branch to arrange an event, the supermarket said it has received hundreds of applications at its 331 branches.
Never Miss a Retail Update!David McCullough, chief executive of older people’s charity Royal Voluntary Service, said: “We know first-hand the devastating effects of isolation and loneliness for older people and at no time is this more acutely felt than if you are on your own at Christmas. Waitrose helping more local groups to provide events for vulnerable older people, ensures they too can enjoy some good food and company, which will make a huge difference to the happiness of older people this Christmas.”
Waitrose community, sustainability and ethical sourcing manager Tina Varns added: “It is fantastic that Waitrose branches are supporting 17,000 people in their communities over the festive period. Our Partners are really excited about the events and looking forward to working with local causes to spread a little Christmas cheer across the country and make a difference.”
