Waitrose to create 700 jobs as it opens record number of stores in inner London
Waitrose is to create 700 jobs in inner London throughout 2013 as it opens 10 new little Waitrose convenience stores and one full size supermarket in the capital.
It will be the largest number of new stores the business has opened in inner London in one year in its 109 year history.
The new stores will double the retailer’s existing presence in the convenience sector within London. The first of the new outlets will open in Vauxhall in the Spring with the location of the remaining new convenience stores to be announced later this year.
A new full-sized Waitrose supermarket will also open in the summer in Greenwich as part of the New Capital Quay development.
Never Miss a Retail Update!Waitrose director of development, Nigel Keen, said: “London is an important part of our heritage and this is another major milestone for our business. It demonstrates our ambition to continue increasing our presence and improving our accessibility to those in the capital who wish to shop with us.”
Waitrose first entered the convenience sector in 2008, but only launched the ‘little Waitrose’ format in January 2011 in Old Brompton Road, Kensington. It currently has 36 convenience stores across the UK with the most recent opening at Clapham Common in January this year.
