Waitrose to be first supermarket to stock Chinese and Brazilian wines

China might be at the top of the medal table during the Olympics but its wine has yet to strike gold in the UK.

However this could be set to change following an announcement by Waitrose that it will stock the Chinese wine Changyu Cabernet Gernischt, the only Chinese wine to be available in a UK supermarket.

Following the success of the launch of two Indian wines last year, Waitrose is looking to extend its range to include wines from lesser known wine producing countries. It is also planning to be the first supermarket to introduce a wine from Brazil, a sparkling rose Miolo Cuvee Tradition Brut Rose NV.

Wine buyer Katie Mollet explained: “We’re bringing in a new era of lesser known wines being sold in the UK as the interest in China, and more specifically the Chinese wine industry, continues to grow. We scour the world to find exciting new wines and were particularly impressed by the Cabernet Gernischt 2011 from Changyu.”

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Mollet added: “Waitrose is proud to be leading the way for Chinese and Brazilian wine to grow in popularity in Great Britain, and we think our customers will enjoy this voyage of discovery with us.”

Both wines will be on offer as part of the Waitrose World of Wine showcase from the 28 August.
