Waitrose store receives 1,816 applications for 74 jobs

Waitrose has received a massive 1,816 applications for the 74 jobs it has created at its new Hampton shop, which is due to open on 11 January.

The grocer said it has recruited a third of the store’s staff via its local Jobcentre Plus office.

Commenting on the number of applicants, Waitrose Hampton store manager, Steve Yates, said: “We are thrilled to be opening in Hampton and have been overwhelmed by the volume and calibre of the job applications. We firmly believe that the shop should have a local identity and this begins with our employees so interviews were conducted locally and nearly all our staff live within a short distance of the store.”

Waitrose is planning to open at least 25 smaller format convenience shops and ten larger supermarkets across the UK in 2012 as part of a major expansion of its store portfolio.
