Waitrose sales up 1.5% last week
Waitrose increased its sales by 1.5% year-on-year last week.
Commenting on the performance, Waitrose supply chain director David Jones said the rise came despite tough comparatives driven by a major promotion in the equivalent week last year.
He added: “Looking at the second half of the year that has just ended, our sales were up by 5.7%. This growth comes against a backdrop of unprecedented price deflation in the market, caused by good global harvests bringing down commodity food prices and by price cutting in the supermarket sector.”
Waitrose said sweet treats and indulgent products both sold well last week with dessert sales rising by 11.5% and ice cream sales increasing by 8%.
The approach of Valentine’s Day helped drive champagne sales 17% higher year-on-year while sales of milk chocolate truffles surged by 186% compared to the previous week.
