Waitrose reports a 10.1% rise in Q3 sales

Waitrose has reported an 8.2% rise in sales year-on-year last week and a 10.1% increase in third quarter sales as it reaps the benefits of its biggest ever value campaign.

In the three months to 30 October, the grocer opened five core branches, three convenience shops, and began a little Waitrose trial on two Shell forecourts. It also unveiled major refurbishments at its Canary Wharf and Sevenoaks branches.

The grocer’s online business continued to grow, boosted by the opening of its Dotcom Fulfilment Centre in Acton. Last week Waitrose said online orders were up by 50% on the same week last year.

Tony Solomons, Waitrose retail director, said: “Looking ahead to the final quarter, we’re gearing up for Christmas with a fantastic range of products and a strong marketing campaign.

“Last week we unveiled our new Christmas TV advert which has received a phenomenal response from our customers on Twitter.”

The advert features Delia Smith and Heston Blumenthal in their own school of Christmas magic, demonstrating how Waitrose can add magic to the festive season and providing a sneak preview of new products.

Waitrose said its customers have already begun snapping up festive treats with sales of Christmas snacks and confectionery last week up by 25% on last year, Christmas gifts up by 59% and speciality gammons up 26%.
