Waitrose launches new recyclable wine cork

Waitrose has announced that it has become the first UK retailer to launch a carbon neutral, fully recyclable wine cork.

The Nomacorc closure, which be found in Waitrose shops from this week, is made from plant-based materials using renewable energy and minimal water consumption.

The Cubist Pablo Old Vine Garnacha 2013 from Spain will be the first wine to arrive on UK shelves using the cork.

Nick Room, Waitrose wine buyer, said: “This is a great step forward for Waitrose and we’re thrilled to be the first supermarket to introduce this revolutionary new wine closure. Not only is it fully recyclable, but has all the benefits of cork without the risk of spoiling the wine. We’ve chosen The Cubist because their award-winning premium wines are a perfect pairing for this innovative technology.”

Waitrose said the closure, which uses Plantcorc technology, consistently delivers the right amount of oxygen and minimizes environmental impact by preventing spoilage and waste from wine fault. The closure has distinct wood-grain markings and bark-like crevices and lines, and has a soft tactile feel.
