Waitrose launches first sparkling wine from own vineyard
Waitrose has started selling the first bottles of a sparkling wine made from grapes grown at its own vineyard in Leckford, Hampshire.
Retailing at £29.99, the Leckford Estate Brut 2011 was made at English wine estate Ridgeview using Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes harvested in 2011. The wine will be available in 27 branches, online and from the Leckford Farm Shop.
Waitrose is the first supermarket to plant a vineyard.
Waitrose English wine buyer Rebecca Hull MW, said: “We’re so excited to finally introduce the Leckford wine to our customers. It’s been more than four years in the making, with our dedicated Partners at Leckford working hard to nurture the vines and harvest the grapes. The team at Ridgeview have done a fantastic job to produce an excellent quality English fizz to be proud of and we can’t wait for shoppers to try it.”
