Waitrose introduces Indian wine to UK
Waitrose has become the first supermarket in the UK to stock wine from India.
The retailer is selling the Ritu Viognier and Zampa Syrah wines which are made from traditional grape varieties grown in the Maharashtra region of Western India.
Matt Smith, Waitrose wine buyer said: “The quality of Indian wine has improved a great deal over the last five years with investment and expertise pouring into the industry.
“India has some ideal regions for grape growing and it is exciting to be the first multiple retailer in the UK to showcase the quality this fascinating country has to offer.”
The news comes as Waitrose revealed that sales for the week ending 27 August were up 9.9% as customers stocked up on drinks and barbecue items for the bank holiday weekend.
