Waitrose English wine sales on the rise
Waitrose has revealed that sales of its English wines are up 13% year-on-year.
With the announcement coinciding with English Wine Week (28 May to 5 June), the supermarket said sales of still English wines have risen by 14% while sales of sparkling wines are up 12% compared to 2015.
Earlier this year Waitrose expanded its range to include 12 new English sparkling wines. This has taken the combined offering of English and Welsh wines to over 100.
Waitrose wine buyer Becky Hull said: “We’re proud to stock the widest range of English wine in a supermarket. We continue to introduce wines from new English vineyards for our customers to experiment and enjoy. English Wine Week is important to mark the growing industry and many of the English wines we stock come from small beginnings, so we are really proud to be so closely involved in the English wine industry at such an exciting time.”
The supermarket said the expansion has been made possible through the Waitrose Local & Regional scheme where wines are stocked in branches 30 miles or less from their vineyards. However, the whole range is also available nationally via the Waitrosecellar.com website.
