Waitrose aims to reduce packaging by half by 2016

Waitrose has announced a new target to halve the amount of packaging it uses by 2016.

To help meet the target, the retailer is making three major changes to its product ranges which it says will save nearly 100 tonnes of packaging each year.

Packaging for the Menu from Waitrose range of prepared meals and the Good to Go range of 190 snacks and sandwiches has been redesigned and reduced, while ‘Flow wrap’ packaging has been rolled out for all meat, with the plastic tray in packs of pork and lamb now removed.

Waitrose packaging and reprographics Manager, Karen Graley said: “We are always working hard to reduce packaging where we can, to decrease the waste reaching our customers’ bins and ensure they can recycle as much as possible. Re – launching a range is a fantastic opportunity to do this and cutting packaging by nearly 100 tonnes per year is a great result to have achieved on our journey to halving packaging by 2016.”

Never Miss a Retail Update!

The commitment forms part of the 12 new Waitrose Way Commitments which include initiatives to cut waste and use less energy, championing British food and regional suppliers, making time for staff to volunteer for good causes, and making it easier for customers to make healthier choices when buying food.
