Virgin Megastores to stock portable DVDs
Designer Vision to supply entertainment group
The Virgin Megastores chain is to take on the high street electrical retailers with a deal to sell portable DVD players in its UK stores.
Designer Vision, which specialises in portable DVD systems for the motor and retail markets, has won a contract to supply Virgin Megastores with an initial 1,500 portable DVD systems.
The British Video Association estimates that 140m DVDs were sold in 2003, 75 per cent more than the year before and more than double the number of videos sold. Virgin now gives DVDs equal status to music and, in some stores, has moved DVDs on the ground floor.
Angelo Panayiotou, chairman of Designer Vision’s operating subsidiary, said: “Virgin Megastores’ position in the market as a leading DVD retailer makes it the ideal place to sell Designer Vision portable DVD systems. Over 1m people visit a Virgin Megastores branch somewhere in the world every day.
“I am confident that this order represents the start of an ongoing and mutually rewarding relationship with Virgin Megastores.”
Alongside its 150 branches in the UK, Virgin operates stores in Australia, France, Greece, Japan, Kuwait, the Lebanon and the US, with Designer Vision hoping “to further its relationship with Virgin Megastores over the coming months.”
