Usdaw urges Camelot to keep lottery in Woolworths
Shopworkers’ union, Usdaw, is trying to reverse Camelot’s decision to stop selling National Lottery tickets in Woolworths stores.
Woolworths will remain open for over the Christmas period. However, Camelot suspended ticket sales in Woolworths yesterday, with immediate effect, swiftly after the news broke that Woolworths was entering administration.
Today Usdaw is writing to Camelot, the Lottery commission and Andy Burnham MP, the secretary of state for Culture, Media and Sport in an attempt to get the decision reversed. John Gorle, Usdaw national officer, said: “It came as devastating news for our members that Woolworths is going into administration. However, we were pleased that the stores would remain open for the time being. “If National Lottery ticket points are withdrawn from stores this will further reduce the footfall of people coming into the stores and buying other products. “Lottery operator, Camelot, is appointed by the Government to run the UK lottery. Yesterday the Government pledged its support for Woolworths, so we hope that they will see sense and not make this difficult time any harder by allowing the National Lottery to pull out of Woolworths stores.”
