Usdaw launches national Marks and Spencer recruitment drive
Retail union Usdaw has launched a national Marks and Spencer recruitment drive after a survey of members found strong support for an independent trade union within the high street giant.
Usdaw members will be leafleting potential new members outside M&S stores after the survey revealed that 82% believed the support of a trade union would help them secure better pay and more respect from management.
Usdaw represents shop staff working for many of Britain’s most successful retailers and are seeking a formal agreement with M&S to represent staff bringing the union’s vast experience of the sector to help build on the company’s recent revival.
“This recruitment drive is being led by our existing members within M&S who are telling us that many of their colleagues would be interested in joining us,” says Usdaw general secretary John Hannett. “Our members know our vast experience in the retail sector can help to protect their terms and conditions as M&S makes significant changes to the way it operates and we can work with the company to help make sure their recent revival continues.
“M&S workers want an independent trade union and one who knows the retail sector inside out, so the more people who join the greater pressure there will be for M&S to talk to us about a formal recognition agreement.”
