Shopping centre visitors in line with last year
July 22 2002
The World Cup and Golden Jubilee only had a marginal affect on vsitors to shopping centres, according to the latest FootFall index.
Visitor numbers to retail outlets and shopping centres were down by 0.2 per cent in May and 0.3 per cent in June, compared to 2001. according to the FootFall Index.
David Smyth, marketing manager at FootFall, said: “This level of footfall is good news for retailers and shows that the retail industry is as strong as it was last year.
“The pedestrian throughput has been especially positive given that retailers have had to attract the football fans during the World Cup and the general public during the Golden Jubilee celebrations while coping with the impact of bad weather.
“As the sales come to an end, it will be interesting to see whether footfall drops dramatically or continues at a strong level.”
The index covers more than 75 shopping centres across the UK, taking in over 5000 retail outlets.
