UK footfall levels increase in February
Year-on-year measure confirms spending downturn
March 6 2003
UK shopper numbers increased in February, according to traffic analysis by FootFall.
Across the country, the FootFall Index shows that the number of shoppers was up 2.3 per cent compared to January.
The finding seems to be at odds with figures from the CBI earlier this week which showed that retailers saw a fall in consumer numbers.
However, the year-on-year measure, which Footfall said is a more effective way of determining the current market, shows that February 2003 is down 2.2 per cent on February 2002.
David Smyth, marketing manager at FootFall said: “This increase in shopper numbers in February goes against the apparent trend at play since the beginning of the year. However the fact that shopper numbers are down year-on-year tends to supports recent speculation and reports that growth in consumer spending is slowing.”
