UK consumer confidence holds steady in March

UK consumer confidence in March has remained unchanged from the previous two months, figures released by GfK NOP revealed today.

The headline index stayed at -26 in the month, five points higher than the same month last year.

While the forecast for personal finances over the next 12 months declined by 1 point to -6, four points higher than this time last year, the expectation for the general economic situation fell two points to -27. This was three points higher than the same month in 2012.

GfK’s gauge of the climate for making major purchases increased three points to -23, eight points higher than the same time last year.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Commenting on the figures Nick Moon, managing director of social research at GfK, said: “Whilst a third month with the Index unchanged may not see like cause for rejoicing, it does now begin to seem that the British public’s mood has climbed slightly out of the very deep trough it was in for almost all of 2012, and what we are seeing now looks more like the new normal than a temporary boost.

“The Index is still extremely low in historical terms but even a small rise, when sustained as this one has been, should be considered good news.”
