UK consumer confidence holds steady in April

A survey conducted by GfK NOP has revealed that the UK consumer confidence index remained at -31 in April, unchanged from March.

The index measuring personal finances during the past 12 months rose 2 points to -23, while the index gauging people’s assessment of their financial situation in the coming 12 months fell 3 points to -13.

However, there was a slight improvement in the index measuring people’s appetite to splash out on major purchases as it rose to -30  from -31 in March.

The news follows official data released on Wednesday showing that the UK economy has returned to recession after contracting 0.2% between January and March.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Nick Moon, GfK Social Research managing director said: “The figures this month will not offer the government any relief in light of the news that the economy has slipped back into recession.

“There are no signs either within the survey or in the recent economic figures to suggest any immediate improvement.”
