GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

Times of economic distress requires innovative thinking

Security should not be ignored in tough times as a cost-saving measure.

James Kelly, Chief Executive of the BSIA, recently commented that business security should not be overlooked in recession. “Investing in the protection of your premises will provide long-term cost savings by dramatically reducing the likelihood of crimes occurring”.

Travis Perkins is an excellent example of how investing in technology has both saved operational cost and improved security. “Protecting our business assets through heightened security measures is of high importance to Travis Perkins. Investing in WebWay IP/GPRS has allowed us to unlock savings today and realise new value in the future. We can be certain that the system meets all insurance requirements and industry best practices, which underpins our self insured status.”
comments Jonathan Davis, Central Monitoring Station (CMS) Manager, Travis Perkins PLC.

“At Travis Perkins we have invested in our own in-house Centralised Monitoring operation. The WebWay solution was very cost effective to implement and is provided with full 24 hour support from the WebWayOne. The system enables us to remove the cost of telephone lines and to transmit better alarm and system performance data. This combination of information means that we can proactively mitigate risks, delivering better protection to the business.”

Using the combination of intruder alarms, CCTV and WebWay signalling Travis Perkins are able “to make thorough security judgments”. “After upgrading to WebWay we proved the investment in a real situation. A branch was attacked via a line cut, followed hours later by an intruder alarm. Additional zone information was subsequently received and we were able to inform to police of the confirmed situation and the movements of the intruders. An arrest was made and our assets protected.

Our previous analogue signalling system would not have provided this visibility of the event in real time. The Travis Perkins CMS has a good track record of managing alarm confirmation and has a good strike rate of arrests. Our security systems, signalling and CMS processes are proving to be a real business asset.”

Travis Perkins has installed WebWay IP/GPRS across the estate to deliver significant annual line rental cost savings. Additional benefits include reduced key holder call outs through the remote diagnostics of events and faults, and the reduction of engineer visits through remote maintenance of systems. WebWay communicators allow for the integration of many applications including Intruder, Fire, CCTV and DVR systems providing Travis Perkins with the ability to monitor their entire estate through a single device. “WebWay allows for us to remain innovative by providing far greater flexibility than before. Our next consideration is the integration of DVR’s in order to heighten our security further.”
