The Works nominated for National Business Award

Customer Service Strategy accolade for discount book retailer
Discount book retailer The Works, has reached the finals of the Customer Service Strategy of the Year Award at the National Business Awards 2004.

The Birmingham based bookstore group was recognised as one of the top five UK customer service companies at The Kensington Royal Garden Hotel in London, having beaten strong competition from businesses throughout the UK.
The National Business Awards, acknowledged by The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, as ‘the UK’s business Oscars’, have been established to reward and recognise the importance of both national and regional business excellence to the success of the UK.
The company recently changed its name from Remainders as part of its strategy of developing The Works core brand. With more than 200 shops nationwide and employing over 1,500 employees, The Works Retail is Britain’s leading discount book retailer.
The company offers a wide range of discount books but also offers value products in artist materials, stationary, cards and gift wrap plus CDs and DVDs.
Joy May, human resources cirector, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by everyone throughout the company, since the management buy out in August 2003 and the expansion of the store network we have responded to increased sales and customer levels but not at the expense of customer service.
“By improving working relationships throughout the business we can ensure that we offer our customers the very best in service, value, range and innovative products.”
