The Force is with Wal-Mart
Star Wars release boosts US sales
Wal-Mart has seen its US sales given a lift by the high-profile release of the Star Wars trilogy on DVD.
The world’s biggest retailer said the release boosted electronics sales during the week to September 25, as well as driving sales in other categories such as toys, where Star Wars merchandise sold well on the back of the DVD box set.
Wal-Mart is sticking with forecasts of a 2 to 4 per cent same store sales increase in the US for September as whole. Other strong categories last week were bedding, food, pet supplies, and sporting goods.
The East and the Southeast US were the strongest sales regions, with customer traffic up, but higher average spend accounting for the lion’s share of sales growth.
