The appeal of new ranges helps boost sales at John Lewis

Thirteen branches delivered double-figure increases on last year with Oxford Street ahead at 17 per cent

Figures for the trading period for last week (to 25 September 2010) showed that the company delivered an overall increase of 15 per cent on last year with johnlewis.com delivering an increase of 49 per cent.

It was Home that led the way last week with a 16 per cent increase on last year. The ‘Value’ range was very popular with customers, the new autumn/winter catalogue also proved very popular, new ranges in lighting were up 21 per cent and the gift collection delivered a 27 per cent gain.

Fashion also came in with a result just short of 16 per cent with good performances across the board. The best result came from childrenswear – 35 per cent up on last year. Other highlights included men’s formalwear at plus 48 per cent, women’s shoes and, in particular, boots with an increase of 36 per cent. Another sign of autumn having arrived was outerwear’s 22 per cent increase.

Electricals and Home Technology was up by 13 per cent with much interest still in all things electronic. But it was white goods that stole the show with a 24 per cent increase.
