Tesco’s farmer – friendly drive

Tesco is taking its ‘Every Little Helps’ motto to extremes, by trumpeting the opening of six regional sourcing offices as a ‘huge boost’ for small suppliers, according to the Daily Mail today.

In reality, it is merely hiring another twenty staff, on top of the 250,000 workers it employs in the UK. Those buyong and marketing staff will be given a desk in the back offices of six supermarkets. The fact that Tesco is bothering to do this demonstrates how conscious it is about the need to improve its farmer friendly credentials. It is in the midst of a Competition Commission probe amid concerns that its market share is over 30 per cent.
