Tesco to transfer 2,000 jobs in distribution restructure

Tesco is restructuring its distribution operations in the UK by closing three centres and moving work to two new sites in Reading and Dagenham with the transfer of 2,000 jobs.

The three centres identified for closure include Harlow where 800 staff are employed, Weybridge which has 650 employees and Chesterfield with 400 staff. Although the Magor distribution centre in south Wales will remain open, 150 jobs will be cut at the site.

Tesco is understood to be looking to streamline its distribution centre operations by moving work to the new sites in Reading and Dagenham.

The supermarket said that all staff whose current jobs are being lost will be offered new employment at other sites within Tesco.

A spokeswoman for Tesco said: “We’ve been reviewing our distribution network, and have confirmed plans to close some of our current distribution centres and open new ones that will give our customers a better service and improve working conditions for our colleagues.

“Colleagues who are affected will be offered jobs at other Tesco sites, including at the two new distribution sites we have confirmed we will be opening, in Reading and Dagenham. Two thousand jobs will be created at those sites.”
